St Barts Coffee Roaster: The Island's Only Small-Batch Roastery
Where Caribbean mornings begin with beans roasted this week, not last month
Why Go
On an island famous for champagne and rosé, this tiny roastery is where in-the-know locals and yacht crews come for something rarer than vintage Burgundy — coffee that was green a few days ago and roasted this morning. Since 2015, Bruno Dubreuil has been quietly turning St Barth into a serious coffee island, one hand-packed bag at a time.
The Experience
Tucked into the hills west of Gustavia, the roastery feels more like a workshop than a café — the smell hits you before you find the door. Inside, burlap sacks of green beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala and Brazil share space with a compact drum roaster that Bruno fires up daily. It's not a place to linger over laptops; it's a place to talk beans, sniff freshly cracked samples, and walk out with something that will make your villa's coffee setup redeem itself. Villa chefs, boutique-hotel breakfast programs, and returning visitors treat it as a mandatory first-day pit stop, restocking whatever ran out between trips. The gallery space at the back rotates local art, so pickups often turn into ten-minute cultural detours.
What to Try
Ask Bruno what he roasted this morning — he'll usually push a single-origin Ethiopian or a washed Colombian if either is fresh off the drum. The house espresso blend is the workhorse most villa kitchens run. Do not skip the cascara (dried coffee cherry tea, brewed like an herbal infusion — sweet, tart, unusual), and if you want a proper souvenir, grab a bottle of the artisanal coffee rum, which almost no one off-island has tasted. Bio-compostable Nespresso-compatible capsules solve the villa-machine problem elegantly; cold brew bottles are the beach-day move.
Insider Tip
Call ahead (0690 26 34 68) and ask Bruno to roast a specific origin to your preferred profile — he'll do custom small-batch roasts for guests staying a week or longer, and they'll be ready in 24–48 hours. Also: buy beans, not ground. Villa grinders exist, and the difference over five days is night-and-day. If you're chartering, most crews will happily pick up a standing weekly order for you.
The Practical Stuff
Located west of Gustavia (plus code W52H+RWP, 97133 St Barthélemy) — a short drive from the harbor or Public. Payment in euros; cards accepted. Distribution is also through select island grocers and hotels, but the full range and the freshest roasts are only at the roastery itself. Expect a quick 20–30 minute visit unless you get into a long conversation about origins, which is likely. Best visited weekday mornings when Bruno is roasting.
