The Experience
Saint Barth Tennis Club is the island's proper community court complex, not a resort amenity, and that's exactly the appeal. You walk in past the low clubhouse, sign in for the hour, and step onto courts that have hosted three generations of St. Barth families along with whoever happens to be off-charter that week. Afternoons and early evenings are the sweet spot: the trades pick up over the plaine des jeux, temperatures drop into playable territory, and the social hum starts as club members drift in for doubles. Lights let you keep rallying well after sunset, which is a small miracle on an island where most activities wind down at dusk. It runs as an association more than a business — you sense it in the friendly, no-fuss registration and in the way the coaches remember returning visitors' backhands from last season.
What to Try
Book an hour-long court rental for a casual hit, or level up with a private lesson from one of the club pros — they teach in French and English and are used to both first-timers and rusty adults trying to find their game again. Families should ask about the kids' programs, which start from age 3 and run as group clinics; it's one of the few real activities on the island for little ones that isn't beach-based. If you're staying more than a few days and want a social fix, ask about the club's doubles days (journée de double), when members mix in visitors for round-robin play.

Register in person between 4:30 and 8 p.m. at the clubhouse rather than trying to sort it out by phone — walk-in bookings for the same evening are usually possible, and the staff will pair solo players with a hitting partner if you ask. Bring your own racquet if you're picky; loaners exist but the strings have seen some Caribbean humidity.
