Saint Barth Marine

Gustavia's go-to chandlery where yacht crews and weekend sailors stock up on everything from bilge pumps to snorkel fins

Why Go

Tucked into a low-slung building on Rue de la Presqu'Île, Saint Barth Marine is the kind of place you'd walk past a hundred times as a tourist and never notice — until the day your outboard packs it in, your dive mask strap snaps, or you decide to actually try that trolling rig off Pain de Sucre. Then it becomes the most useful address in Gustavia. It's a working chandlery in a harbor built for play, and half the fun is watching megayacht bosuns queue up at the counter next to fishermen in flip-flops arguing over the merits of Ballyhoo rigs.

The Experience

The shop hugs the water's edge on the quieter, working-side of Gustavia harbor, with its own dinghy dock out front so tenders can nose right in from the anchorage. Inside it's tight, well-lit, and cheerfully un-precious — think fluorescent bulbs, marine-grade everything on pegboards, salt-crusted floor mats, and a chalkboard behind the till with the current French VAT rules. Rope by the meter, stainless shackles, Rule pumps, Yamaha two-stroke oil, Rustoleum topside paint, epoxy sticks, safety flares, snorkeling kits, spearfishing gear, fishing tackle, courtesy flags, life jackets in every size from toddler to XXL. The counter staff are bilingual, patient with weekend sailors, and refreshingly direct when they don't stock what you want — they'll tell you who does, or order it through their Budget Marine account.

What to Try

If you're just visiting, come for the practical stuff you didn't pack: reef-safe sunscreen, a quality mask-and-snorkel set (way better than the beach-vendor plastic), a dry bag for the dinghy day, or a spearfishing rig if you've got the license. Charter guests should grab a proper Saint Barth courtesy flag as a souvenir — it's the one boat-related thing you can actually take home. Serious sailors: this is where you top up on Sikaflex, engine anodes, and impellers before the Bucket or the Voiles regatta weeks. And if you fish, ask what's biting — they'll point you at the right lures for wahoo season versus mahi runs.

Insider Tip

Come by tender, not by car. Parking on Rue de la Presqu'Île is a headache during high season and the private dinghy dock out front is the whole point of the location — nose in, tie up, walk ten steps to the door. Also: French island retail rhythm applies, so don't try to swing by between roughly 12:30 and 2 pm. They shut the roll-door for lunch like everyone else in Gustavia, and no amount of yacht-crew charm reopens it early.
