Pitou's Cellar
Gustavia's source-direct wine cave, curated by a Saint-Barth native with a little black book of French vignerons
Why Go
Tucked on a quiet stretch of rue Samuel Fahlberg, Pitou's Cellar is the shop the island's chefs and yacht chief stewards quietly text before a dinner service. Mahé 'Pitou' Stakelborough grew up in Saint-Barth's restaurant scene and turned that palate into a boutique cave in 2015, flying twice a year to France to shake hands with the growers behind every bottle on his shelves.
The Experience
The room is small, cool and deliberate — think stone-and-wood shelving, low light, and a counter where Pitou or one of his ambassadors will actually stop what they're doing to talk you through what's drinking well right now. It doesn't have the theatrical polish of the Carré d'Or luxury shops a few streets over; it feels more like stepping into a working négociant's cellar, where the conversation moves easily from a Chablis premier cru to which fisherman is bringing in wahoo that afternoon. Most visitors come in for one bottle and leave with three plus a spirit they'd never heard of, because Pitou has a habit of pulling something off the shelf 'just to taste the idea of it.'
What to Try
Lean into the exclusives you genuinely cannot buy elsewhere on the island: Pitou is the sole St-Barth distributor for Clase Azul tequila, Bellevoye whisky (the French blended malt in the frosted tricolor bottle), and Embargo rum — any of the three make a memorable villa gift. On the wine side, ask for a Burgundy in the €40–80 range from a small domaine he's just come back from visiting; that's where his curation shines brightest. Champagne lovers should ask what grower he has in from outside the big houses. If you're building a picnic for Colombier or Gouverneur, a chilled Provence rosé and a bottle of the local Ti' Punch–ready rhum agricole is the classic Pitou pairing.
Insider Tip
Free delivery kicks in at €150, and it's the real move if you're staying in a villa — order the morning of your arrival and Pitou's team will drop a stocked cave at the house before you've cleared customs at SBH. Even better: mention the restaurant you're eating at that night (Bagatelle, Eden Rock, L'Isola, Nikki Beach) and he can often tell you which of his bottles is on their list, so you can pre-taste at home for a fraction of restaurant markup. Private tastings can be arranged on request through the ambassadors — worth doing if you're a group of four or more, and virtually unknown to day-trippers.
The Practical Stuff
7 Rue Samuel Fahlberg, Gustavia — a two-minute walk from the harbor and the Carré d'Or. Phone/WhatsApp +590 6 90 25 78 17, email pitouscellar@gmail.com. Bottles start around €22 and climb well past €200 for Grand Cru Burgundies; the sweet spot for most visitors sits between €35 and €90. Cash and cards accepted. Like most Gustavia shops, expect a midday closure and shorter Saturday hours — call ahead, especially in the low season (September–October), when the island slows to a crawl.
