The Experience
Don't expect a polished tasting room — Port Franc is a working cave, and that's the charm. You walk in past pallets and shipping cases into cool, dim aisles stacked floor-to-ceiling with Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Barolo and rums from across the Caribbean. The staff, who've been curating this list for decades, will happily walk you through what's drinking well right now, pull a rare vintage from the back, or build a case for tonight's villa dinner. The Public location is the mothership; the newer sister shop, La Cave 19 52 in Gustavia (opened 2022), hosts Thursday evening tastings if you want the more sociable side of the operation.
What to Try
Ask about the current allocations of Burgundy from Leroy or Roagna — they get bottles that never make it to most Caribbean shelves. The Champagne selection is deep beyond the usual Dom and Veuve: try a grower like Jacques Selosse if you've never had one. For something rooted in place, pick up a bottle of aged agricole rum from Martinique or Guadeloupe to sip on your terrace at sunset.
