L'Épicurien
St Barth's pocket-size answer to Fortnum & Mason
Why Go
Push open the door in the L'Oasis center and you're suddenly not in the Caribbean — you're in a Parisian épicerie fine that just happens to sit on a hillside above the Atlantic.
The Experience
L'Épicurien is a tightly curated gourmet grocery run by owners Evelyne and Romain, tucked into the small Centre Commercial de L'Oasis in Lorient (the postal address lists Gustavia 97133, but the shop actually sits a five-minute drive east of the harbor). The layout is more European delicatessen than island market: chilled cases of smoked salmon, cured meats, foie gras, and aged cheeses on one side; shelves of caviar, tapenades, French mustards, olive oils, artisan biscuits, gourmet olives, teas, and desserts on the other; and a wine and champagne selection that quietly punches above the shop's square footage. It's where villa chefs, yacht stewards, and honeymooners with a rented kitchen swing through to build a picnic or over-invest in dinner. Staff will help you compose a cheese plate or point you toward what arrived on the last freight — stock shifts with what's actually good this week.
What to Try
Build a beach picnic straight from the counters: a slice of Bayonne ham, a wedge of Comté or a runny Époisses, a jar of tapenade, a fresh baguette, and a chilled Provence rosé. If you're pre-loading a villa fridge, the smoked salmon, foie gras, and caviar are the reason regulars keep coming back — the sort of things that are painful to find this fresh anywhere else on the island. Don't skip the biscuit and chocolate shelf on the way to the register.
Insider Tip
Come mid-morning, before the villa managers and yacht stewards descend around lunchtime — the delicatessen counter moves fast and the best charcuterie and cheeses are sold from the display, not restocked in real time. Bring a cooler in the car if you're heading on to Colombier or Gouverneur; nothing you're buying here wants to sit in a hot trunk.
The Practical Stuff
Inside the Centre Commercial de L'Oasis in Lorient (filed under Gustavia 97133 on paperwork, but you're driving east toward Lorient beach, not the port). Easiest by rental car or scooter — parking is right at the door. Phone +590 590 87 50 14 to pre-order caviar, foie gras, or large cheese and charcuterie boards, especially December through April when demand from villas and yachts spikes. This is a gourmet grocery and takeaway, not a sit-down restaurant — plan to picnic on the beach or plate it up back at the villa.
