Island Diving (St-Barth Plongée Birdy Dive)
Small-group dives inside Saint-Barth's Nicole Aussedat marine reserve, run by the island's diving pioneer.
Why Go
Founded in 1993 by Bertrand 'Birdy' Caizergues, this PADI 5-Star center is the closest thing Saint-Barth has to a diving institution — 10,000+ logged dives, a custom 35-foot boat, and a habit of pulling coconut shells out of a dive bag to summon curious reef fish the old Melanesian way. The vibe is French, low-key, and unmistakably local; you're not squeezed onto a cattle-boat, you're heading out with a lifer who knows every crevice of the reef.
The Experience
Trips leave from the Gustavia harbor and typically loop through the 22-plus dive sites inside the Réserve Naturelle Nationale de Saint-Barthélemy, where mooring buoys and a strict 10-diver cap keep the reefs in remarkable shape. Expect drift dives along the Pain de Sucre wall just off Gustavia (sponges, sea fans, a drop-off to about 28 m), turtle sightings in the seagrass off Colombier, and boulder swim-throughs at Île Fourchue where nurse sharks nap on the sand. Birdy also runs longer boat trips over to Saba and Statia when conditions and demand line up — pinnacle diving that most Saint-Barth visitors never realize is on the menu.
What to Try
Book the two-tank 'rendez-vous' morning trip if you're certified — it usually pairs a reserve wall dive with a shallower reef so you get variety in one outing. First-timers should ask about the Discover Scuba experience in the calm bay at Colombier. Bring a GoPro; visibility is regularly 20+ m and Birdy will happily coax lobsters, moray eels and reef fish out of hiding for the camera.
Insider Tip
Message the shop directly rather than booking through a concierge — Birdy caps groups intentionally and the good weeks (calm easterly window, late spring or early autumn) fill up with returning divers first. If there are only a couple of you, ask nicely about a custom charter to Île Fourchue or, weather permitting, the day trip out to Saba's pinnacles; it's the single most underrated dive day in the northern Caribbean.
The Practical Stuff
Base: Gustavia, Saint-Barthélemy 97133. Boat departs from the harbor — arrive 15 minutes early for paperwork and gear fitting. All PADI courses offered (Discover Scuba through Divemaster), plus snorkeling trips and shark-awareness dives. Full rental gear on board. Cash and card accepted; euros preferred. Trips run year-round, but sea state is calmest December through May. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a light windbreaker for the boat, and your certification card if you have one.
