The Experience
Les Mouettes is the anti-St-Barth St Barth: a low-slung row of seven air-conditioned bungalows lined up on the quieter end of Plage de Lorient, run by the same local family for four decades. You unlock a screen door and step straight onto white sand — no lobby, no pool bar, no concierge in a linen suit. Each unit has a kitchenette, a bathroom, a terrace and Wi-Fi, and that's the whole pitch. Mornings are surfers paddling out on the reef, afternoons are church-quiet, and evenings are whatever you cook (or carry back from JoJo Burger up the road). It feels less like a hotel and more like borrowing a friend's beach shack — which is precisely why regulars keep it booked out year after year.
What to Try
Book bungalow #1 or #2 if you can — they sit closest to the water and catch the trade winds head-on. Do a morning coffee on the terrace, then walk the length of Lorient beach before the day-trippers arrive. Use the kitchenette: hit the Marché U in Saint-Jean for a rotisserie chicken, baguette and a bottle of rosé, and eat on your terrace as the sun drops. If the surf is up, the reef break directly out front is a local institution — bring a board or rent one from Reefer Surf Shop nearby.
Insider Tip
There's no room service and no restaurant, so plan a supply run on arrival — the little épicerie in the same complex out front covers coffee, croissants and cold Presidente beer, but for anything more, drive five minutes to Saint-Jean. Also: cash is welcome, the family answers the phone (not an app), and if you're flexible on dates, ask about shoulder-season rates in May/June or early November when prices soften considerably.
