Caribbean To Go
Chef Paloma's Martinique-born bokit counter — the island's cheekiest antidote to fine-dining fatigue
Why Go
In a St Barth restaurant scene that trades in white tablecloths and three-figure tasting menus, this sleek little counter across from the Oasis supermarket in Lorient does something quietly radical: it serves the real deal French West Indies street food — hot, fast, packed in paper, and priced like you're actually on vacation instead of paying rent.
The Experience
You walk into Centre l'Îlot expecting another beach-town takeaway and instead find a bright, colorful room that feels more Fort-de-France than Gustavia. Chef Paloma, who cut her teeth in Martinique, runs the pass with a grin and a griddle full of bokits — the puffy fried dough sandwiches that are Guadeloupe's greatest gift to street food. Order at the counter, watch her stuff yours with crispy mahi or poulet boucané, grab a passion-fruit shake, and either park at one of the few seats or walk two minutes to Lorient beach and eat with your feet in the sand. The whole thing takes fifteen minutes and costs less than a cocktail in Shell Beach.
What to Try
The Crispy Mahi bokit with Mayo Colombo (curry mayonnaise) is the sleeper hit — flaky fish, warm dough, that faintly sweet curry lift. The Poulet Boucané channels Martinique's smoked-jerk tradition and is the move if you want something with a slow burn. For a fuller sit-down meal, the Crousty'bowls on coconut rice (€22.60) with fried plantain and crispy onions travel beautifully back to a villa. Round it out with accras (the fritters rotate, so ask what's on today) and a fresh mango-passion milkshake.
Insider Tip
Bokits are engineered for the beach, not the table — order them to go, drive five minutes to Anse de Lorient or on toward Marigot, and eat them straight from the paper while the dough is still crackling. They lose half their magic if you let them steam in a takeaway box for the ride home. Also: delivery through Delifood only kicks in at 6:30pm with a €25 minimum, so lunchtime is a walk-in game.
