Buns St Barth

Handmade Charolais burgers in a laid-back Lorient courtyard

Why Go

On an island where tables often demand a dress code and a second mortgage, Buns is the delicious counter-argument — a casual burger joint tucked beside Boulangerie Choisy where the beef is Charolais, the buns are baked in-house, and dinner comes without the fuss.

The Experience

Set in the low-key hamlet of Lorient, Buns feels less like a St Barth restaurant and more like a friend's backyard grill night. The vibe is barefoot-and-boardshorts casual: order at the counter, grab a seat under the string lights, and watch the cooks build burgers to order. Locals cycle in for takeaway, families settle in for a quick dinner after the beach, and yacht crews sneak over on nights off. Everything — from the brioche buns to the sauces and hand-cut fries — is made in-house daily, using organic vegetables, French Charolais beef, and locally caught fish. It's the kind of place that reminds you the best meals on the island aren't always the priciest.

What to Try

The classic Charolais cheeseburger is the benchmark and worth ordering first — the beef is genuinely excellent and the homemade bun holds up to every bite. The Goat Burger (with warm chèvre and caramelized onions) is the sleeper hit, and the local catch-of-the-day fish burger changes with what came off the boats that morning. Vegetarians shouldn't skip the Beyond Meat option — it's treated with the same care as the beef. Add the hand-cut fries and one of the daily specials chalked on the board.

Insider Tip

Buns closes on Tuesdays and only opens for lunch on select weekdays, so plan around the dinner service (6:30–10:30 PM) which runs almost every night. Call ahead for takeaway (+590 590 51 34 33) or order via Delifood — on high-season evenings the wait for a table can push 30–40 minutes, but takeout is usually ready in fifteen. Grab it and drive five minutes down to Lorient Beach for a sunset picnic.
