The Experience
Béranger is old-school St Barth: a small, family-run rental outfit tucked onto Rue du Général de Gaulle, right where the yachts bob in Gustavia's inner harbor. Walk in, sign a paper contract, get a quick briefing on the island's blind hairpins, and you're out the door with a scooter humming or a Suzuki Jimny idling at the curb. No slick corporate counter, no upsell theatre — just the vehicle you asked for and a wave goodbye. The fleet spans 50cc–125cc scooters, a handful of compact cars and mini-SUVs built for the island's narrow lanes, and a few Harley-Davidsons for anyone who wants to arrive at Shell Beach in full rumble. Because they're centrally located (rather than at the airport), it's the natural pick if you're arriving by ferry from St Martin or stepping off a yacht for the week.
What to Try
For solo travelers or couples, the 50cc scooter is the sweet spot — no motorcycle license required, easy to park anywhere in Gustavia, and cheap enough to keep for the whole stay. Groups and families should ask about the Suzuki Jimny or a Fiat Panda 4x4: small enough for the goat-track road down to Colombier, sturdy enough for the climb to Toiny. If you're an experienced rider, the Harley-Davidson day rental is a bucket-list cruise on the coastal loop from Lorient to Grand Cul-de-Sac.
Insider Tip
Reserve by email or phone at least a couple of weeks ahead in high season (mid-December through Easter) — the small fleet books out fast, and walk-ins in January are almost always turned away. Ask them to hold the vehicle at their office rather than dropping it at the airport; the in-town handover is faster, and you'll skip the queue at the arrivals counter. Also: gas up at the Gustavia station before returning — they'll charge a premium if you bring it back empty.
