Why Go
Toes in the sand, a chilled bottle of rosé in the ice bucket, and Mediterranean plates arriving on a turquoise lagoon that's protected enough for kite-surfers to skim past your table — Amis is Le Barthélemy Hotel's beach restaurant, and it might be the most photogenic long lunch on the island.
The Experience
You arrive along the wooden walkway at Le Barthélemy and the whole restaurant opens onto Grand Cul de Sac, a shallow, reef-sheltered lagoon that stays glassy while the rest of St. Barth chops. Chef Vincent Gomis (with sous chefs Marie Cécile Gomis and Matthieu Oysellet) runs the kitchen — the cooking is French Riviera in spirit, built on local fish, garden herbs and Provençal olive oil, and it lands in that sweet spot between a proper restaurant meal and a barefoot beach club. Days start early with pastries, pressed juices and à-la-carte breakfast; midday is lingering rosé lunches under white parasols; and Sunday brunch has become the see-and-be-seen table on this side of the island. At night the parasols come down, candles come out, a live band plays and the Champagne list takes over — it's noticeably more grown-up than the daytime scene.
What to Try
Anything raw and local — the ceviches and crudos of day-boat fish are the clearest expression of the kitchen. Follow with a whole grilled catch of the day (splittable, and priced by weight) with lemon confit and a side of the herb-heavy salad. The truffle pizzetta is a not-so-secret staple among regulars, and the vitello tonnato is a reliably excellent starter. Save room for the vacherin or the signature pavlova — both are built for two. On Sundays, the brunch spread leans coastal-Italian with a raw bar, and the bottomless Ruinart pour is the point.
Insider Tip
Book a lunch table on the sand-level deck (not the raised interior) for around 1:30 pm — the earlier seatings go to hotel guests, and by 1:30 the kite-surfers are up and it's the best light of the day. If you're not staying at Le Barthélemy, call the restaurant directly rather than using an aggregator; ask for a 'beachfront' table and mention if it's a birthday — they're generous with a candle and a glass of Champagne. The lagoon here is swimmable and calm, so bring a swimsuit and plan to laze for two or three hours; there's a shower on the way back to the car park.
The Practical Stuff
Located at Le Barthélemy Hotel on Baie de Grand Cul de Sac, about a 15-minute drive from Gustavia — the road down to the bay is narrow, so a small rental or a taxi is easier than a large SUV. Open daily: breakfast from 7 am, lunch 12–4 pm, dinner 7–11 pm, plus Sunday brunch. Reservations are essential in high season (Dec–Apr and August); TheFork works, but calling the hotel is more reliable. Expect roughly €60–90 per person at lunch and €100+ at dinner with wine; brunch is a set price. Smart-casual dress — a linen shirt or a beach cover-up is fine for lunch, a touch more polished for dinner. All major cards accepted; euros preferred over dollars.
