St Barth's roads are ribbon-thin, hilly, and rewarding — having a car parked at Gustavia's harbour the second you arrive is what turns a good trip into an unhurried one.
The Experience
Alamo's Gustavia Harbour desk sits right where the ferries and tender boats put you ashore, so there's no taxi shuffle before your holiday actually starts. It's a small, functional pickup point — think island-style rather than airport-scale — with staff who know the drill for cruise passengers, day-trippers from St Martin, and villa guests off private charters. The real perk is the delivery-and-collection service: anywhere on the island, any hotel or villa, at no extra cost between 8am and 6pm, provided you pre-arrange it. Pick up in town, drop off at the airport, or have keys waiting at your villa in Colombier — the flexibility is what makes them useful on a 25-square-kilometre island where distances are short but hills are steep.
What to Try
Skip the standard sedan and go for something small and nimble — a Mini, a Suzuki Jimny, or the iconic open-top Mini Moke if it's in the fleet. St Barth's lanes get very narrow past Lorient, parking spots at Shell Beach and Gouverneur are tight, and a compact 4x4 handles the climbs to Colombier and Toiny far more happily than a full-size car. If you're two people with light luggage, the smallest thing on the lot is almost always the smartest choice.
Insider Tip
There are only two petrol stations on the entire island — one by the airport in St-Jean and one in Lorient — and both close early and shut on Sundays. Fill up on Saturday morning, and hand the car back with fuel in it, because the refuel fee if you don't is punitive. Also: outside Gustavia there are essentially no road signs, so download an offline map before you drive off the lot.
The Practical Stuff
Location: Gustavia Harbour, 97133 St Barthélemy — at the ferry/tender dock in town. Hours: roughly 8:00–18:00 daily; delivery and collection anywhere on the island are free within these hours but must be pre-arranged. Minimum age 21 (25 for SUVs), maximum 80; a full driving licence held for at least one year is required. Driving is restricted to the island of St Barthélemy only — you can't take the car to St Martin. CDW-TP is available with a deductible around USD 1,200; tyres and soft tops aren't covered, so mind the kerbs on those Moke rims. Book well ahead in high season (Christmas–New Year, February) when the fleet sells out weeks in advance.
