Why Go
Most airports are somewhere you endure on the way to a vacation. SBH is the vacation's opening scene. Twin-engine Islanders and Pilatus PC-12s tip over the ridge at La Tourmente, drop hard toward the roundabout, flare, and stop just before the sand of Baie de Saint-Jean. Passengers clap. Sunbathers on the beach look up. You've arrived in Saint Barth before you've even collected your bag.
The Experience
The airfield sits in a natural bowl at the head of Saint-Jean, hemmed in by the green wall of La Tourmente to the west and the turquoise crescent of the bay to the east. Only certified STOL pilots and aircraft under 20 seats are allowed in, which keeps the whole operation intimate — no jet bridges, no crowds, no security theatre. You walk across the apron from a Tradewind or St Barth Commuter turboprop, past the yellow control tower, and straight into a small open-air terminal where a handful of luxury boutiques and a rum bar wait between the arrivals door and the taxi rank. Departures are equally cinematic: the takeoff roll ends at a hard cliff drop, and the plane is airborne over open water within seconds. Because the runway closes at sunset (no lights), the whole rhythm of the island bends around daylight — flights cluster in the morning and taper by 5 p.m., and the airport goes quiet and lovely at dusk.
What to Try
Post up at the low stone wall along the Route de Saline where it crosses the runway threshold — this is the legendary spot to watch inbound aircraft skim the road markers overhead. Ten minutes at that fence, with a cold Carib from the beach shack behind you, is one of the free wonders of the Caribbean. If you're flying out, arrive 45 minutes early not because check-in is slow (it isn't) but because the small departures lounge has surprisingly good browsing — resortwear, sunglasses, and a proper duty-free counter for rum and local vanilla. First-timers should book the window seat on the left side of the aircraft coming from Sint Maarten (SXM) for the full ridge-drop view.
Insider Tip
Skip the panicked scramble for connections at SXM. Book the St Barth Commuter or Tradewind shuttle with at least a three-hour buffer from your international arrival — SBH crews will not hold the last flight of the day, and if you miss it you'll be sleeping in Simpson Bay. Better yet, if you land in SXM after 3 p.m., take the 45-minute ferry from Oyster Pond instead; you'll trade the famous approach for a calmer arrival and skip a lot of small-plane luggage weight rules (strictly 22 lbs checked on some carriers). Pilots also quietly prefer morning arrivals — the trade winds are gentler before noon.

IATA: SBH. Location: Saint-Jean, roughly 10 minutes by taxi from Gustavia and 5 minutes from the Saint-Jean shopping strip. Open sunrise to sunset only — no night operations. No commercial jets; connections almost always route through Sint Maarten (SXM), San Juan (SJU), Antigua (ANU), or Guadeloupe (PTP). Taxis queue outside arrivals but do not use meters — fares are set by zone and rise about 50% after 8 p.m. and on Sundays. Rental car desks (Gumbs, Turbé, Europcar) are a two-minute walk across the parking lot; reserve well ahead in high season. Cash in euros is useful for taxis and small vendors; cards work everywhere else.
