Why Go

There is no airport on Earth where arrivals feel this close. At SXM, the final approach glides just meters above the sunbathers on Maho Beach, and the departures kick up a jet blast strong enough to launch grown adults into the surf. It is functional infrastructure that has, almost by accident, become one of the Caribbean's most iconic experiences.

The Experience

Princess Juliana is a compact single-runway international airport on the Dutch side, tucked between the turquoise water of Simpson Bay Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Because Runway 10 begins right at the shoreline, the descent path passes directly over Maho Beach at rooftop height — close enough to read the airline logos and feel the engines in your chest. Locals treat it like open-air theater: a laid-back stretch of sand with beach bars, a painted flight schedule on a surfboard, and a small crowd that grows and thins with each arrival. Behind you, the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort towers; in front, a chain-link fence, a road, and then the runway threshold. When the widebodies come in — Air France, KLM, Delta from the US mainland — phones go up and cheers go around. When they leave, the jet blast turns the beach into a wind tunnel and the shallow water into whitecaps. Inside the terminal itself, SXM is straightforward: check-in on the ground level, a compact departures hall upstairs, a handful of duty-free shops, a couple of bars, and reliably slow lines during the midday cruise-and-flight overlap. It's the gateway to the whole island, and for many day-trip visitors from Anguilla, St. Barths, and Saba, it's the first and last impression of the region.

What to Try

Grab a plastic cup of something cold at the Sunset Bar & Grill and check the hand-lettered board for the next big arrival — the KLM and Air France widebodies are the crowd-pleasers. Walk the sand path along the fence to watch the aircraft line up on final from a side angle; the photos are better than from head-on. Stay for at least one departure so you understand what 'jet blast advisory' actually means. If you're flying out, arrive earlier than you think — the terminal is small, but security and immigration can back up quickly when multiple widebodies push at once. On the way in or out, ask your driver to slow down on the Beacon Hill road that curves behind the runway threshold; the view of the whole approach corridor from up there is spectacular.

Insider Tip

The huge arrivals get the Instagram fame, but the truly wild moment is the takeoff roll of a fully loaded transatlantic widebody — stand behind the beach (not on it) and hold on to anything bolted down. Also: the airline schedule painted on the surfboard at Sunset Bar is a rough guide, not gospel. For accurate times, pull up FlightRadar24 on your phone; delays here cascade quickly because the airport only has one runway and limited stand space.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Maho, Dutch side, about 10–15 minutes by car from Philipsburg and 25–35 minutes from Grand Case depending on traffic around Simpson Bay. Currency: USD is standard on the Dutch side and universally accepted at the airport; EUR works for many transactions too. Languages: English is the working language; Dutch, French, and Spanish are also common. Taxis are readily available curbside with fixed government-set fares — confirm the rate before you get in. Rental car counters (including nearby Budget) are on-site or a short shuttle away. For plane-spotting, no ticket or reservation is needed — Maho Beach is public and free. There are no lockers at the beach, so travel light. Sun exposure is intense and there is very little shade near the fence; bring water, a hat, and reef-safe sunscreen. Do not stand on the beach directly behind a departing jet — the airport posts warnings for a reason, and injuries have happened.
