The Experience
Downtown Taxi Association is one of the licensed cooperatives that staffs the taxi stand just outside the Philipsburg cruise terminal and along the streets of the Dutch-side capital. Rides are dispatched in order, driven by locally-licensed operators, and priced by the government-published zone chart rather than a meter — so you agree the fare before you climb in. Vehicles range from sedans to open-air, canopied vans that can hold a whole cruise-ship group, which makes the association the default option for families and small parties heading to Maho for plane-spotting, Orient Bay for the beach clubs, or Grand Case for a lolo dinner. Because drivers work the port day-in day-out, most will happily quote a half- or full-day island tour on top of a straight point-to-point, and they know exactly how long you have before the last tender back.
What to Try
Ask for a fixed-rate island loop: a typical circuit hits Maho Beach for a runway landing, a photo stop at the Dutch/French border monument, lunch in Grand Case, and Marigot Market before returning you to Front Street with time to shop. If you're only in town for a few hours, negotiate a straight round-trip to Maho or Mullet Bay with a set pickup time — much cheaper than booking a tour desk excursion.

Fares are per-person for the first two passengers and per-additional-passenger after that, with surcharges after 10pm, on Sundays, and for luggage — confirm the total (and currency: USD or EUR) with the driver before you pull away.
